Learn how to operate your air conditioner

Air conditioning is one of the most used and sought after appliances nowadays. Its presence in areas with extreme climates is increasingly necessary. Many dream of having this device, or even already own one, but they do not know how an air conditioner really works.

It may seem unrelated, but understanding how air conditioning works can help you extend the life of the unit or even avoid problems at the time of purchase.

Do you want to know how traditional air conditioning and some other types work? So read on and find out.

How does traditional air conditioning work?

It is very difficult to explain how air conditioning works in general, as there are different types with aspects and technologies that change the way one model works from another.

We can start by talking about a more traditional air conditioning model, which works only in cold mode and with a traditional compressor. It works in a more basic and standard way, which ends up having some changes only in more complex models.

Explained in a simpler and easier to understand way, an air conditioner can be considered a refrigerator. The basic operating idea of the two machines is practically the same, using the evaporation of a refrigerant to provide cooling. The mechanisms responsible for this step work the same way in the refrigerator and in the air conditioner.

In air conditioning, the refrigeration cycle works in the following way:

  • The compressor compresses cold air and turns it into hot gas at high pressure.
  • The hot gas passes through a heat exchanger (responsible for heat dissipation) and condenses into a liquid state.
  • This fluid flows through the expansion valve. In this process it evaporates and turns into a cold gas at low pressure.
  • This cold gas also flows through a heat exchanger, allowing the gas to absorb heat and cool the surrounding air.

Another very important aspect of understanding how an air conditioner works is the BTU amount of the device. This is the unit of measurement used to measure the capacity of the device. BTU is the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of water, where 1 BTU = 1055 joules.

Types of air conditioning and how it works?

As we said before, not all devices work the same way. Each model is unique, and these features, functions, and technologies often make the device perform differently. Here are some types of air conditioners and how they work.

How does an inverter air conditioner work?

This model has become one of the most widely used and sought-after today. Inverter technology allows the device not to experience large temperature fluctuations, as well as consume less energy. But after all, how does an inverter air conditioner work?

When we turn on the device and set the required temperature, the traditional compressor starts to cool (or heat) the environment little by little. This process is not very fast and when the environment reaches the chosen temperature, the compressor turns off. It stays that way for a while, and comes back again when the ambient temperature changes again.

The process of turning the compressor on and off requires more intense power peaks, which increases consumption. Thus, in addition to bringing more expenses, the temperature of the environment can fluctuate, which reduces the efficiency of the device and can cause inconvenience to those around.

Unlike a conventional device, the inverter compressor does not turn off when the environment reaches the ideal temperature. This is where a lot of people end up. Because, in this way, there are no voltage spikes.

It's like a car that needs to stop and start more often than a car traveling at a constant speed. The second, of course, will consume less fuel.

How does hot and cold air conditioning work?

Reverse cycle air conditioning, also known as hot and cold air conditioning, has two different functions: cooling the room or heating it. In cooling mode, most appliances work as described above, drawing hot air from the environment and blowing in cool air.

In heating mode, the cycle runs in the opposite direction, achieving the name reverse cycle. The whole process begins with the extraction of cold air, which goes through the same steps inside the device, but in the opposite direction, where it is released as hot air and heats the room.

Some air conditioning functions

Many air conditioners have multiple functions. These traits can change the way a team works. Check out some of the air conditioning features below.

Timer function

This function is very useful when you cannot turn off the device yourself, for example when you leave the place after a while and are afraid that you will end up forgetting to turn off the device. It is possible to program the device to turn off at the desired time.

Swing function

This button is intended to heat the environment evenly, and distribute the air conditioner throughout the place. It is ideal for environments with many people, for example, so that everyone receives air conditioning with the same efficiency.

Sleep function

For those who usually sleep with an air conditioner on, this function is very useful, as it keeps the climate pleasant at night and provides better sleep quality, preventing the user from waking up at night with cold or heat.

Turbo function

This is one of the air conditioning functions that can come in handy if you need to adapt to the place more quickly. As its name says, this function “gives a boost” to the cooling to make the cold environment faster and more efficient.
