What is the opening angle of the lamp?
The opening angle of the lamp beam can be defined in a simplified way as: the width of the light where most of the lamp's light will be concentrated, about 80%-90%.
This value tells us the angle at which the light beam opens, and thus determines the area it can illuminate depending on the distance to the light source. We must take into account that LEDs are more dim than halogens for example, and therefore we must pay special attention to this aspect.
Depending on the use we will give it, we will be interested in a light source with one or another opening angle. The usual thing is to use lights with a smaller opening angle as accent lighting, to highlight decorative items or, if it is a shop, different products. Conversely, lamps with a wider angle, usually from 90 degrees, are used for general lighting of a space.
The amount of illumination that a lamp will provide us in a given application will not only depend on whether it has a higher number of lumens, there are also other factors that affect it, such as the opening angle of the lamp's beam.

The amount of illumination in the plane is directly proportional to the luminous flux or number of lumens and inversely proportional to the solid angle of the lamp, meaning that the greater the number of lumens of the lamp, the greater the feeling of illumination. In a certain space, but the larger the opening angle, the less feeling we will get of lighting in this space.

We can see how the 8 watt lamp with only 800 lumens, using it in this application, gives us a greater sense of luminosity (lux), because it shines in the direction we want thanks to its 180 degree opening.
The other lamp that has a higher amount of lumens but on the contrary has a 360 degree aperture that wastes the light that illuminates the ceiling and therefore in the area of interest to us, it gives a much lower sensation of shine.
To choose one angle or another, we must take into account the height at which the lamp will be and the surface to be illuminated. If the height is high and we have a very wide angle, we will lose light intensity compared to more focused light, but the lighting will be more uniform. On the contrary, to light a room with little height in general, if we use a luminaire that blocks the light too much, shadow areas can be created where the illuminated areas will be completely defined, as if we were using a flashlight.
